Saturday, October 13, 2007, Historic Haunts Walking Tour, Detroit Shoreway Neighborhood: Actress Joannie Hoover in the role of Mary, the worried wife, reacts to news of an explosion at Crib #5 in Lake Erie on July 24, 1916. The character Mary is the wife of Jonathan Smithers, a worker involved in digging the tunnel out to Crib #5 to create a clean water source for Cleveland. Smithers was one of three survivors rescued by Cleveland African-American businessman and inventor, Garrett Morgan, who used a gas mask he invented to descend into the gas-filled tunnel for the rescue.
