Plain Press wins best overall community coverage
(Plain Press, July 2008) The Plain Press won the First Place Award for Best Overall Community Coverage at the 2008 Conference of the Neighborhood Community Press Association of Greater Cleveland. Judges from the Society of Professional Journalists judged entries published in 2007 in eleven categories in a competition, which in addition to the Plain Press included entries from the Old Brooklyn News, the Royalton Recorder, the East Side Daily News, and the Shaker Square Connection.
Plain Press Managing Editor Chuck Hoven won three first place awards in the competition – Best Editorial/Opinion Piece, Best Series, and Best Historical Feature. Hoven won two Third Place awards in writing categories, one for Best Editorial/ Opinion Piece and one for Best Series. Hoven won a Second Place award for Best News Story.
Dustin Brady, writing for the Plain Press won third place for Best Feature Story for a story on a group of church volunteers that painted the homes of elderly and handicapped low-income residents.
David Myers of the Plain Press won Second Place for Best Advertisement for his design of the Tend-R-Lean Steak Co. advertisement.
Plain Press photographer John Cartwright won Second Place for Best Photo.
Plain Press Editor Debbie Sadlon and Managing Editor Chuck Hoven share a Third Place award for Best Page Layout.
Photographer Joe Wadowick and Plain Press Editor Debbie Sadlon shared a third place award for Best Photo Feature for the photography and layout of photos of the St. Ignatius of Antioch Basketball League Championship games.
