Friends of Monroe Cemetery take a look back in time
(Plain Press, November 2008) The Friends of Monroe Cemetery hosted "Meet the Neighbors," a walking tour to raise funds and offer a history of some of the cemetery's most interesting and intriguing residents. The tour took place on October 18th at the Monroe Cemetery, located at 3207 Monroe Street, and featured re-enactors portraying some of the prominent figures who helped to settle the Ohio City area and shaped the early history of the City of Cleveland.
Prominent characters included Jacob Baehr, the first brewer of German descent; Henry Whitman, the first and last mayor of Ohio City who helped to incite the 1836 "Bridge War" between the City of Cleveland and Ohio City; and Mayor Irvine Masters, the mayor of Cleveland at the time.
All who came had a great time and learned a little about how the then Cleaveland, Ohio became Cleveland, Ohio. The tour was lots of fun and people had many chances to interact with the players, all of whom are members of the Friends of Monroe Cemetery/Monroe Street Cemetery Foundation.
Funds raised by the walking tour went to aid the Monroe Street Cemetery Foundation to help with its efforts to renovate the Monroe Street Cemetery Gate House.
